Grad Project Update

Many things have changed thought the course of the first semester of my last year at Emily Carr. Originally our grad film was suppose to be a collaboration between my friend Daniel Frade and regrettably that is not the case anymore. We both looked at the amount of time and the many different things we wanted to accomplish and the reality of it is, we are not going to have enough time to accomplish what we want to achieve. Our options were to continue with the gradfilm project and finish with unsatisfied work or break up and work on individual demo reels.

The Blog for the collaboration is found here:

Our origional intent with the grad film was that it was intended to be used as more of a showcase reel than an actual film. What we had intended to do was too extravagant and it exceeded the boundaries of our technical know-how. Given the option of continuing on and struggle to finish a unsatisfactory piece I have decided to work on a demo reel instead. I feel that this is a better option for me as I am more technically oriented and my real goal for post graduation is to get into the industry and find a job.

For the Grad project I intend to create a Modelling and Texturing demo reel for the purpose of showcasing my skill and to "hopefully" land me a job in the future.

Looking back on all the work I have done, I feel that most of what i had worked on are flawed and not "Demo Reel" worthy. I know for a fact that I can do much better now as I do understand 3D workflow much better than originally.

Some of my old work:

I am very familiar with zbrush, Maya, Mari, and V-ray and it's my intention to base my demo reel off those softwares.

I have reviewed most of my old work and decided that Most/all of them won't really make it into the demo reel. My goal by the end of 4th year is to have 3 extremely well done pieces to showcase what I have learned and to demonstrate my abilities. First is a character second is a vehicle and third is an environment piece.

I chose these three because it covers almost all aspects of what a modeler needs to be able to do. It will have both organic and Hard-Surface elements they will all be textured and rendered with v-ray.

Because the piece I am planning to make for the demo reel is new. I have created a production scheduler to follow during the development period. I have 4.5 Months to Create 3 different projects and which means just around 1 month to work on each piece. The last bit of time is reserved to render and compose and edit the demo reel together.

Production Schedule for Modeling and Texturing Demo Reel:

Modeling for the Demo Reel isn't all I have to do. I have offered my services to people who are creating 3D films such as Melissa and Dan Kim.
